Laptop Revival – Part 1

A picture of my laptop before being mutilated.

Patient: Gateway Solo 9500

My goal is to get this eight year old laptop to full working condition, without spending a lot of cash. Some of the problems I might encounter during this procedure are:

  • Missing Screws (though might not be a problem if I find another suitable enclosure)
  • Overheating CPU, on a count of not being used for many years
  • Rare/hard to find parts
  • Boredom

Parts I am missing:

  • CD Drive (needed for installing an OS; laptop does not boot from USB)
  • Lots and lots of screws
  • IDE hard drive and Floppy drive motherboard connector
  • A few important keyboard keys, ESC, F1, F2, Right-Arrow
  • USB and sound input/output module
  • LCD screen

I don’t plan on using this as a laptop however, so I do not need to buy a new screen. I might use the guts for my next project, the Layered-Cardboard PC Case (inspired by Yoshi’s attempt on The Screensavers.) Perhaps make a case out of wood.. Who knows? I’ll post an update when I get all the parts together.
